How we calculated it
Source: NASA POWER, hourly cloud amount from the CERES SYN1deg satellite product, 1° grid. For every grid cell we took the hour of maximum eclipse and the 15 days from 26 July to 9 August in each year from 2001 to 2025 (375 values). "Clear or mostly clear" means cloud amount below 25%. These are historical odds, not a forecast.
Limits: a 1° cell is about 100 km wide, so coastal fog or mountain clouds are averaged out. Satellite cloud amount also counts thin high cloud that may still let you see the eclipse.
Rent a car to chase clear skies
If clouds threaten, a car lets you drive along the path to a clearer spot on the morning of the eclipse.
