About this site and our methods

Eclipse 2027 Map is an independent website about the total solar eclipse of 2 August 2027. It is not affiliated with NASA, ESA, IGN or any astronomy organisation. Everything on it is calculated from public scientific data, and the method is described below so that you can check it.

How eclipse times are calculated

Times, the path of totality, totality duration and the share of the Sun covered are computed from the Besselian elements published by Fred Espenak (NASA Goddard Space Flight Center), with ΔT = 71.7 s, using the classical method of the Explanatory Supplement to the Astronomical Almanac. The same code runs on our server when the pages are built and in your browser when you tap the map.

How we checked the accuracy

We compared our results with independent sources for 11 places (Cádiz, Málaga, Seville, Tarifa, Tangier, Benghazi, Luxor, Jeddah, Madrid, Rome, Berlin) and with the NASA path table. Largest differences:

No published prediction, ours included, accounts for the mountains on the edge of the Moon (the lunar limb profile). They can shift contact times by 1 to 3 seconds and the edges of the path by 1 to 3 km. Near the edge of the path, stay a few kilometres inside it.
